Empiricism and Relationism Intertwined: Hume and Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity

Einstein acknowledged that his reading of Hume influenced the development of his special theory of relativity. In this article, I juxtapose Hume’s philosophy with Einstein’s philosophical analysis related to his special relativity. I argue that there are two common points to be found in their writings, namely an empiricist theory of ideas and concepts, and a relationist ontology regarding space and time. The main thesis of this article is that these two points are intertwined in Hume and Einstein.

Trust is a critical issue in human - robot interactions: as robotic systems gain complexity, it becomes crucial for them to be able to blend into our society by maximizing their acceptability and reliability. Various studies have examined how trust is attributed by people to robots, but fewer have investigated the opposite scenario, where a robot is the trustor and a human is the trustee. Influence of the exchange and correlation functional on the structure of amorphous InSb and In3SbTe2 compounds

We have investigated the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of the amorphous phase of InSb and In3SbTe2 compounds of interest for applications in phase change non-volatile memories. Models of the amorphous phase have been generated by quenching from the melt by molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory. In particular, we have studied the dependence of the structural properties on the choice of the exchange-correlation functional. It turns out that the use of the Becke-Lee-Yang-Parr functional provides models with a much larger fraction of In atoms in a tetrahedral bonding geometry with respect to previous results obtained with the most commonly used P…
Estimates for the differences of positive linear operators and their derivatives

The present paper deals with the estimate of the differences of certain positive linear operators and their derivatives. Oxur approach involves operators defined on bounded intervals, as Bernstein operators, Kantorovich operators, genuine Bernstein-Durrmeyer operators, and Durrmeyer operators with Jacobi weights. The estimates in quantitative form are given in terms of the first modulus of continuity. In order to analyze the theoretical results in the last section, we consider some numerical examples.
